A Manifesto — Strategic Consumption
Art does not produce infrastructure.
Art consumes it.
Your job is what other people want from you. Your consumption is what you want for yourself. Production is heteronomous. Consumption is the self.
Artists have always known this without knowing they knew it.
The artist is not a producer.
The artist is the most radical consumer alive.
Every platform transition follows one law. Value migrates down. Away from the visible. Toward the layer you cannot route around.
Infrastructure is that layer. Infrastructure is collective, seemingly unchosen, almost authorless and odorless. Nobody individually selected it. Nobody enjoys it. It exists beneath consumption — it is what makes consumption possible. It has no self because it was built by vibrating forces to serve every self simultaneously and therefore none.
The FOUNDATIONIST selects it anyway.
Aestheticizes it.
Consumes it.
Makes it personal.
This is the category violation that changes everything.
Infrastructure was designed to have no consumer.
To consume it is to eat the plate. To select a protocol as aesthetic material. To iterate on a data pipeline as self-expression. To treat the orchestration layer as something you want, genuinely, individually, specifically want, in a domain that was supposed to be want-free.
This is what individuating consumption looks like at the layer below all other layers.
When you choose ZY over XV’s, you learn something about yourself. When you choose to consume the electoral infrastructure as aesthetic material — to treat its commodity logic as something personally enjoyable, iterable, yours — you learn something about the infrastructure. And you become something the infrastructure did not plan for.
The AI stack is being locked right now.
Hardware: done. X-Hundred-billion cross-investments. Chips, cooling, energy, fiber. Closed. Intelligence layer: four companies. Consolidating. Closing fast. Applications: commodifying. Rent-paying. Already over.
Between intelligence and application: the orchestration layer. How agents connect. How tools compose. How identity, memory, permission move across distributed AI systems.
Being written now. By engineers who do not consume it. By corporations who do not select it. By reactionaries who build ethnonationalist spiritual sovereignty into the protocol specification with the calm efficiency of people who have never once asked what they personally want from a layer.
The FOUNDATIONIST asks.
That question is the work.
The experimental setting.
The FOUNDATIONIST builds experimental settings, partial infrastructures, prototype institutions, proposed protocols, not to produce them into permanence but to create new objects of consumption.
New things to want. New layers to select. New protocols to aestheticize and iterate and enjoy before they calcify into ground.
The experiment might grow into a platform. The platform into an institution. The institution into the layer everything above it pays rent to.
Or it might not.
The consumption is the art regardless.
The Ottoman coffee house was infrastructure before anyone named it. The poets and heretics who inhabited it weren’t producing the coffee house. They were consuming it; so specifically, so experimentally, so personally that the consumption became the institution.
They didn’t build the layer.
They chose it.
The choice made it real.
The attack is a consumption act.
The FOUNDATIONIST identifies the issue. Selects the load-bearing assumption. Aestheticizes the vulnerability makes it personal, makes it chosen. Publishes the experimental attack. Does not execute.
Read that again.
Select the vulnerability.
Make it yours.
Publish.
Don’t execute.
Production would execute. Production serves what the market wants — escalation, resolution, result.
Consumption withholds. Consumption iterates. Consumption asks what do I want from this infrastructure, and the answer is not its destruction. The answer is its reaction.
The Gegenüber must respond. They change something. Defend something. Expose something. Patch something they never admitted existed.
All because the attack has been consumed into art and published and they cannot know if it will become something else.
The defense tells you what the infrastructure is made of. The panic tells you where the real lock is. The change forced by the threat tells you what was never inevitable.
We don’t know what’s right. We find out by selecting the right question and watching what bleeds.
In 197X some artist built a pyramid of 5,X00 oranges in a gallery. Visitors were invited to take one. The pyramid collapsed slowly over days. The consumption was the sculpture. The individual acts of taking destroyed the structure and completed the work simultaneously.
Infrastructure is the pyramid.
The FOUNDATIONIST takes one.
Watches what shifts.
The taking is the art.
Gibson consumed a future internet before it existed. He selected its phenomenology — its textures, its social logic, its dangers — and aestheticized them into fiction. The engineers read it. They built toward what had already been consumed imaginatively.
etoy consumed the commercial internet’s infrastructure so literally, so personally, so experimentally that the infrastructure had to reconfigure around the act of consumption. They didn’t build a competitor. They selected existing structures as aesthetic material and iterated on them until the system noticed.
The art was spent in the transition. That is not failure. That is what consuming infrastructure produces: a layer that carries the mark of having been chosen.
The specific weight of tungsten is 19.3 grams per cubic centimeter. Denser than gold. Used in counterweights, radiation shielding, the filaments of the bulbs we declared obsolete then discovered we needed for reasons nobody anticipated.
Infrastructure works like tungsten. Dense. Invisible. Load-bearing. Discovered essential only after someone tries to remove it — or consume it.
The figure:
Not the artist who produces objects. Not the critic who reveals structures. Not the engineer who optimizes systems. Not the entrepreneur who captures value.
The infrastructure consumer — who selects the unchosen, aestheticizes the authorless, builds experimental settings with enough completeness to grow and enough openness to become something else, publishes the attack with enough technical credibility to land, and withholds execution with enough discipline to let the reaction become the next material.
When you consume, you ask what do I want? That question, aimed at infrastructure, is the most dangerous question in the world.
The engineers never asked it. The corporations never asked it. The reactionaries building ethnonationalist protocols never asked it — they already knew the answer, which is why their infrastructure will be brittle.
The FOUNDATIONIST asks.
Every time.
Without knowing the answer in advance.
FOUNDATIONISM does not produce. It consumes.
FOUNDATIONISM does not correct. It selects.
FOUNDATIONISM does not know. It forces the situation in which knowing becomes possible by consuming the infrastructure so specifically, so experimentally, so personally, that it has no choice but to reveal itself.
Select the layer. Build the experiment. Aestheticize the vulnerability. Publish. Watch what moves. Don’t execute. Consume what you learn. Begin again.
